Frequently

Asked Questions

Will I need to practise between sessions?

Absolutely! Developing these skills is like going to the gym, you are unlikely to achieve results if you only attend once a week or once a fortnight. I aim to work like a personal trainer to provide knowledge and tools to empower my clients to develop between sessions and reach their goals. The work between sessions is where the magic happens.

Is my child too young to do Zoom sessions?

Not at all! Parents and caregivers are coached to develop the play, language and other skills at home which are utilised between sessions to reach your goals. I have extensive experience administering this coaching online and have completed additional play training from Karen Stagnitti from https://www.learntoplayevents.com/  as well as a course in teaching parents how to play.

What is orofacial myology?

Orofacial Myology is a huge passion of mine. It’s an area of study that conducts assessment and provides treatment for disorders relating to the function of the mouth, facial muscles and posture. This may occur alongside oral habits that may disrupt sleep, attention levels, dental, facial, swallowing and speech development.

Symptoms may include:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Low tongue posture
  • Open mouth posture
  • Thumb or finger sucking
  • Speech sound difficulties
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Sub optimal sleep quality
  • Sub optimal breathing
  • Concentration difficulties due to poor sleep and breathing habits
  • Fatigue during the day
  • Sleep disordered breathing
  • Negative impact on facial and skeletal growth
  • Jaw pain/TMD

What is your booking process?

We can discuss some of your questions how I can support your needs in a free Zoom consult. I also will send out some online forms so that I can add you to my booking system and book formal sessions.

Following this we would typically book an initial case history and assessment planning session of approximately 30 minutes.

The next session (s) may be formal and/or informal assessments, typically 50 min sessions.

Thirdly we utilise this information to develop an individualised block of therapy sessions and home practice activities to work towards your goals.

Does a speech pathologist just work on speech?

Many people think we just work on speech sounds but we do far more than that! Speech pathologists work on all aspects of communication. As we develop our skills speech pathologists often have more training in certain areas and less in others so we may refer to colleagues who have the skills to suit your needs. Please find more information about speech pathologists (here)
